Most job applications will require you to create or complete three items:
- send us a copy of your CV
- submit a supporting statement
- complete the job application form
Most job applications will be managed using an applicant tracking system. In our case, we use a system called Jobtrain. You will be invited to create an account and manage your application using Jobtrain.
If successful, you will then be asked to attend an interview, supply appropriate references, and get the relevant recruitment clearances.
You can expand the headings below for advice, resources, and handy tips and tricks to support you during the recruitment process.
Your CV is your first chance to promote yourself. It’s good to make your CV clear and easy to read. We recommend the National Careers website for tips on how to write a great CV.
Your Supporting Statement introduces you to an employer and asks them to think about your application. When you are applying for a job, the job will be allocated a Role Profile.
We suggest using the associated Role Profile to help you structure your supporting statement. The Role Profile will outline the criteria we're looking for for each role. You can systematically work through the Role Profile criteria, and ensure that your supporting statement addresses how you meet each criteria. You can also include examples of how you have demonstrated certain behaviours to support your point.
As part of the application process, you'll have to complete an application form. You will be asked for basic details about yourself and your experience, as well as any additional information needed for the job you are applying for.
If you need any support with any parts of the application form, you can contact our Recruitment Team at recruitment@bathnes.gov.uk, or call us on 01225395146.
If you are experiencing any issues with applying for jobs via Jobtrain, please go to Jobtrain Candidate Support.
Jobtrain is our applicant tracking system. As part of your application, you will be required to make an account on Jobtrain which will help both you and the council to manage your application.
Jobtrain will send alerts to your email account when there has been an update on your application. Please check junk and spam email folders if you have not heard from us. We also recommend that you mark Jobtrain as a 'safe' sender to ensure future emails arrive with you quickly and safely.
If the first stage of your application is successful, we'll invite you to an interview.
Sometimes, you will be given a specific time or date for your interview. Occasionally, we offer a ‘self-select interview option’ where you can book your own interview date and time.
The interview may be in person at an allocated B&NES building or online via Microsoft Teams.
For advice on preparing for an interview, you can visit the National Careers interview webpage, but you can also use the supplied job description and associated role profile to help you think of relevant examples to talk about at interview, to show how you meet the criteria we need.
We understand that everyone has different needs. If you have any requests for interview adjustments that would help you, or you'd like to let us know of any adaptations that would help you undertake the job you're applying for, please let us know.
Examples of reasonable adaptations and adjustments include requesting a sign language interpreter, level access, or asking for interview questions to be reframed to be Autism Friendly.
You can contact the Recruitment Team at recruitment@bathnes.gov.uk, or call us on 01225395146.
If you are successful, you will receive an offer letter through Jobtrain.
Once you accept your offer of employment we will start our recruitment checks. This will include the following:
- Right to Work Check (we use an online program called YOTI)
- References
- Medical questionnaire
- Any additional checks dependent on role, for example you'll need DBS for safeguarding roles
Once you have completed the recruitment checks you will be able to confirm a start date for your new role with your hiring manager.
If you've been successful, it'll be time to hand your notice in with your current employer. However, we advise to only hand in your notice once all steps in the recruitment process have been completed, including all recruitment checks.
