Why not take a look at this two-page guide to apprenticeships or you can dive in and explore how people have fared on actual schemes via the Apprenticeships Ambassador Network South West site. There is also a really useful guide from Amazing Apprentices that has been designed to help Parents & Carers explore the exciting world of apprenticeships with their children, to understand the range of resources and support services available to them, and how to access them.
In case you think you know all about apprenticeships, check out this short myth-busting video created by Matilda who started out with us as a Digital Learning Apprentice and has progressed to being our Digital Learning Designer and Trainer!
Apprenticeships with the council
A career in local government hasn’t always appealed to young people but with the creation of a broad range of apprenticeship roles – doing an apprenticeship with us could be a real and viable alternative to college or university.
Currently, we’re employing more new apprentices than ever before and with over 800 different job roles in the council to choose from, you may be surprised by what you can do.
We are currently in partnership with Wiltshire College & University Centre who offers a wide variety of apprenticeships. They have some useful information about their courses and frequently asked questions. As a leading apprenticeship employer in the southwest, we’re passionate about helping people realise their potential and develop the knowledge, skills and behaviours that will propel them into a career.
Whether you are academic or more practically inclined, you will discover that all types of people work with us. Apprenticeships are available from a level 2 (equivalent to five GCSEs at grade C/4 or above) through to degree level and beyond, minus the debt of course!
What we offer
We are continuing to increase the number of apprenticeships we offer reflecting the wide range of services we deliver to the community. From business administration to civil engineering, MOT mechanics, paralegals, town planning, project management, adult care worker, accounting, social work, and HGV drivers, there really is an opportunity to suit everyone.
As an apprentice with us, you will be doing a real job that directly benefits the community we serve and improving people’s lives. This means that you’ll be working and earning money, with the same terms and conditions as your colleagues, but you'll also have regular paid time set aside for completing the academic aspect of your apprenticeship.
The amount you earn will vary, depending on your age and the level of apprenticeship you are doing. The current rates of pay for apprenticeships are available on the GOV.UK website. However, all salaries will be displayed on the job advert.
Even if you start a job with the Council that isn’t an apprenticeship you will be able to access apprenticeship training to support your career progression.
