Two Executive Directors for B&NES Council

We are recruiting two Executive Directors at a challenging time for local government - but also one that presents huge opportunities.

Introduction from Sophie Broadfield, Chief Executive

Our purpose is clear, we want to improve people’s lives. We do so by delivering on our core priorities as set out in our Corporate Strategy (2023 to 2027).

We’re recruiting for two Executive Director roles – our Executive Director for People and our Executive Director for Sustainable Communities.

Bath and North East Somerset is a place that truly sells itself. From our double‑inscribed World Heritage city to the stunning countryside that surrounds it, it’s a place of beauty, history and opportunity. But what makes these roles special isn’t just the setting—it’s the chance to lead and shape a council that’s ambitious, forward‑thinking, and ready to innovate. That includes accelerating our shift towards prevention and early intervention, bringing services together around the needs of people and families rather than working in siloes, and ensuring residents experience timely, joined‑up support that improves long‑term outcomes.

I have been at B&NES since 2021 and was delighted to be appointed as Chief Executive in November 2025. I am looking for two leaders who are confident, collaborative, and ready to drive change. You’ll be working with a high-performing team—from social care to heritage—and helping to shape the future of our area through major initiatives like our new Local Plan.

You’ll also play a visible role in leading your teams in line with our values. You will need to be bold in your ideas, empowering teams, supportive in your leadership style, and transparent in how you work with communities and partners.

This is a district of contrasts. We have some of the most affluent communities in the country, and some of the most deprived. We’re home to global business leaders and to families facing real challenges. We have two outstanding universities, a thriving cultural sector, and ambitious regeneration plans—from Bath to the Somer Valley.

We need Executive Directors who can navigate that complexity, connect with our communities, and work in partnership with the NHS, the West of England Combined Authority, our voluntary and community sector and businesses to progress our priorities.

It’s a genuine honour to be Chief Executive of this council—and I’m looking for people who share that sense of pride and purpose. Executive Directors who want to break new ground, empower our staff, and help us be a beacon of sustainable development, early intervention, and civic leadership—guided by our values every step of the way.

If that sounds like you, on behalf of the Executive Leadership Team, Cabinet and staff here at Bath & North East Somerset Council, we wish you a warm welcome, and look forward to hearing from you.
