Our region

A view of B&NES countryside

Thinking of working in Bath and North East Somerset? Whatever your lifestyle, our region has somewhere you’ll want to call home. Where else offers a world heritage site, bustling urban life, characterful market towns and cosy rural retreats - all within an easy commute to work?

Bordered by the stunning Mendip Hills to the south, taking in the historic city of Bath, and just a stone’s throw from the cultural hotspot of Bristol, you’re really spoilt for choice with great locations to live. If you love the water, there are the tranquil lakes of the picturesque Chew Valley. Maybe Bristol or Portishead’s trendy harbourside districts are what you fancy? Or perhaps the traditional seaside charm of nearby Clevedon and Weston Super Mare? Go a little further, and B&NES is an ideal base to reach Glastonbury and Wells to the south, Cheltenham, Gloucester and the Cotsworlds to the north and east.

I love the fact I'm surrounded by fields, and that the village has so much rich history. It's almost like living in a picture postcard! - Tim, IT Project Manager

Our region boasts fantastic leisure opportunities for every taste. Nature lovers can explore miles of hikes and cycle trails through our two Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Our regional centre of Bath is world famous for its Roman and Georgian treasures. But we also boast a rich industrial and architectural heritage throughout the region - even a prehistoric stone circle. Or, if the bright lights of the city are more your style, the wider local area is well known for its arts, restaurant and festival scene. And then, there’s always hot air ballooning...

Bath is a beautiful city and I am grateful to be able to live here, there are always things to do and lovely places to explore in the areas surrounding the city centre. - Michael, Software Development placement student

B&NES is a great place to bring up a family. Local parents have a wide range of high quality schools to choose from, with 90% reported Good or Outstanding by Ofsted, well above the national average. You can also search local ISI inspection reports, if you are considering independent schooling. To explore information on support groups, family events and an approved list of childcare providers, check out our council-run database of family resources.

I like the green space that surrounds me. I love the community feeling of where I live. - Claire, Project Officer, Environmental Monitoring

There are B&NES council offices in Bath, Midsomer Norton and the new, award-winning Keynsham Civic Centre. We’ve made flexible working and hot desking available to all staff whose role allows, too. We really do go the extra mile to help you find your work/life balance - so you don’t have to.

We think Bath and North East Somerset is the place to live, work and visit. But don’t just take our word for it. See what our staff have to say.

I grew up in Bristol and spend quite a lot of time there - it’s got art centres, free museums and just a lot going on. - Jackie, Human Resources Business Partner
